This is one way to think of the red hats significance regarding Holden’s brother Allie. Allie is really one of the few people in Holden’s life that he really respects, and loves. Holden does mention that Allie has fiery red hair and it is no coincidence that Holden’s hat is also bright red. Holden had a great relationship with his younger brother Allie. His hat is very important for him because it reminds him of his dead brother Allie. Holden, who is different from his friends, his family, almost everybody around him, reveals it with his red hunter hat. We see him very isolated from the world throughout the novel. He has a complicated life because of the problems he had experienced during his childhood. Holden is protective of his youthful qualities and doesn’t want to abandon them when he drifts into adulthood. In other words, the innocent world of children is the only world that appeals to Holden. To Holden, the world around him, the adult world and all of its members, is phony. From the beginning, it is obvious that Holden does not like anyone, except children. Holden is judgmental and critical to others, angry and a compulsive liar. He enjoys all the amenities of adulthood, like smoking, drinking, but doesn’t appreciate all the things he’d have to compromise, such as losing his innocence and integrity. Holden represents a character who is coming of age, but refusing to grow up. Holden refuses to grow up due to fear of the unknown and this is depicted through the consistency in character throughout the novel. The book focuses on his thoughts and experiences about society. The theme that definitely stands out is the loss of innocence. However, at the same time he narrates more through his many experiences, which he describes in the book, we can see the themes of the work.
